Founded in 1990 as the Informatics Institute of Computer Studies and now known as the Informatics Institute of Technology (IIT), it was Sri Lanka’s first private institution to offer UK-validated degrees in ICT and Business. IIT has a Colombo 6 campus and regional centres in Galle and Kurunegala, educating over 4,000 students and awarding more than 5,000 British degrees.
IIT comprises the School of Computing and the Business School. It offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in partnership with UK universities such as University of Westminster, Keele University, Robert Gordon University, and Manchester Metropolitan University. It’s the only Sri Lankan institution to offer UK M.Sc. degrees locally, backed by UGC recognition and ISO certification.
The institute hosts active research groups in areas like AI, data science, biomedical engineering, and software innovation. A notable annual event—the iCIIT Symposium—celebrates student-led research and connects academia with industry.
IIT students have earned top rankings in prestigious competitions such as the Microsoft Imagine Cup, Google Hash Code, and NBQSA. The vibrant community features clubs, sports, and initiatives like the IEEE EMBS chapter and a student research symposium.
Through the IIT Overseas Transfer Unit, students can transfer to universities abroad. Academic and career support—including internships and industry placements—ensure graduates are highly employable in Sri Lanka and internationally.
The Colombo campus includes modern classrooms, computing & engineering labs, a library, sports facilities, and social spaces. Regular events like "Cutting Edge" showcase student projects and attract industry participation.
