About

Nestled along the Mahaweli River amid the Hanthana foothills, the University of Peradeniya combines academic prestige with verdant beauty—over 700 ha of lush grounds. As the successor of the University of Ceylon (est. 1942), it now hosts 9 faculties (including Engineering, Medicine, Agriculture), 4 postgraduate institutes, 15 centres, and 72 departments—catering to over 11,000 undergraduates and 1,400 postgraduates

The Faculty of Engineering, founded in 1950, stands across the river via the iconic Akbar Bridge—open Mon–Fri & Sat 8 AM–8 PM . The main campus buildings feature colonial and Kandyan-inspired architecture, echoing the design ethos of Oxford and Cambridge—set within scenic gardens and riverine landscapes

Facilities include major libraries, lecture halls, engineering and electronics workshops, botanical gardens, student housing, canteens, houses of worship, and transport links like the Sarasavi Uyana station and university shuttle service
