Berendina Micro Investments Company Ltd (BMIC) is Sri Lanka’s first microfinance institution licensed under the Microfinance Act No. 6 of 2016. Emerging from the microfinance efforts of Berendina NGO since 2007, BMIC now leads with a holistic poverty-reduction strategy—integrating low-interest credit, enterprise development services (EDS), micro-savings, and scholarships for clients’ children.

It also won the SCALE Green Creative Adaptation Donor’s Choice Award for its commitment to sustainable finance—themes reflected in its triple-bottom-line philosophy: People, Planet & Profit.
BMIC channels its modest profits into its sister organization, Berendina Development Services (BDS), which annually operates across seven districts with a budget exceeding Rs. 300 million. Over three years, BDS has positively impacted over 25,000 vulnerable families in sectors including livelihoods, WASH (water, sanitation, hygiene), infrastructure, youth & women empowerment, and education.
BMIC serves a wide footprint in Sri Lanka—operating through **30 branches** across 11 high-poverty districts. Regions include parts of Kegalle, Anuradhapura, Nuwara Eliya, Kandy, Badulla, Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Ampara, Kilinochchi, Vavuniya, Mullaitivu, Jaffna, and Kurunegala—ensuring reach to hard-to-access communities.
