The Vocational Training Authority of Sri Lanka (VTASL) is the statutory body under the Ministry of Skills Development, established on August 16, 1995, to expand vocational training nationwide. It operates an extensive network of 174 Vocational Training Centers (VTCs), 22 District VTCs, and 8 National VTCs—providing access to rural, underrepresented youth and fostering job-ready skills.
• Full‑Time NVQ or Non‑NVQ Courses: Weekdays, 8:30 AM–4:15 PM, lasting from 3 to 18 months.
• Part‑Time NVQ or Non‑NVQ Courses: Conducted evenings or weekends, lasting 1 to 12 months.
• Special Courses: Tailored programs for learners with special needs.
VTASL covers 95 distinct trade areas, including ICT, hospitality, beauty & barber, automobile repair, agriculture, metalwork, woodwork, gem & jewellery, HVAC, print, textiles, office management, and more.
VTASL issues National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) certificates aligned with TVEC’s 7-level framework, internationally recognized and enabling professional mobility. NVQ Level 5 is diploma-level; Level 7 qualifies for postgraduate studies.
Annually, VTASL trains ~32,800 full-time and ~3,900 part-time students. In 2017, it awarded ~24,800 certifications (NVQ, Non-NVQ, and RPL), referring thousands for local and overseas employment or entrepreneurship through its SEPI loan scheme.
