The Sri Lanka–German Railway Technical Training Centre (SLGRTTC) in Rathmalana has provided skilled technician training since 1985 under a German–Sri Lankan partnership. Focused on railway-critical trades—like Diesel Mechanics, Electricians, Machinists, and Welders—it underpins the national railways’ operations.
SLGRTTC runs four full-time NVQ-certified trades:
• Diesel Engine Mechanic (2½ years)
• Machinist (3½ years, NVQ L4)
• Electrician (3½ years, NVQ L4)
• Welder (3 years – NVQ L4 MMA, NVQ L3 Gas Welding)
Each annual intake includes ~90 apprentices, with free training under the national NVQ system. Short-term capacity-building courses for existing staff and technical assessments are also conducted.
• Train apprentices and SLR staff in railway-relevant trades
• Offer trade-testing, assessments, and in-plant training
• Provide infrastructure for locomotive and guard training
• Support engineering undergraduates through workshops
To support electrification of the Colombo Suburban Railway and upcoming infrastructure upgrades, the centre needs new capacity in rolling stock, signaling, telecommunications, mechatronics, PLC systems, and automation. Current facilities lack space, modern equipment, qualified trainers, and advanced curricula.
SLGRTTC’s expansion plan includes:
• A new training wing with multipurpose labs (CNC, CAD, electrical, telecom, mechatronics, simulators)
• New curricula for advanced trades (railway electrification, signaling, track engineering)
• Expanded instructor team, including NVQ L5-qualified staff and SLR visiting specialists
• Infrastructure upgrades: workshops, hostels, library, auditorium, transportation
The goal is to transform SLGRTTC into a modern, centre-of-excellence that supports railway modernization, electrification efforts, and ongoing skill development—aligning workforce competencies with the evolving technical demands of Sri Lanka Railways.
Upgrading SLGRTTC ensures a sustainable pipeline of qualified technical personnel, closes skill gaps during modernization, supports NVQ L4/L5 certifications, and underpins Sri Lanka’s broader railway efficiency and connectivity ambitions.
