About the Rose Garden
Technically known as the Royal Botanic Gardens, Peradeniya, this green oasis was founded in 1821 and expanded from an 18th-century royal pleasure ground into a premier scientific and recreational garden. Today it’s managed by Sri Lanka’s Department of National Botanic Gardens. Official Botanic Gardens Site

Where: 5.5 km west of Kandy, nestled in a bend of the Mahaweli River. • Size: Covers 147 acres (59 ha) at 460 m elevation, with ~200 rainy days per year

• The site dates to 1371 as a royal garden; formally established in 1821 by Alexander Moon under British colonial rule 
• It played a significant botanical role under George Thwaites—who later introduced rubber and helped develop Sri Lanka's tea industry 
• The garden once served as Allied military headquarters during WWII
