Established in 1991 as the Distance Learning Unit and evolved into the Centre for Open and Distance Learning, CODL at the University of Jaffna provides higher education opportunities for learners excluded from traditional programs. It emphasizes outcome-based, flexible learning to reach broader student segments.
CODL offers external degree programs: Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Business Management (BBM), and Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com). It also provides a range of diplomas—Higher Diploma in Physical Education, Professional English, Preschool Education, Counselling, Property Valuation, and Tamil Bala Pandithar—and certificates like Inclusive Delivery for Sustainable Peace, IoT basics, Python, Family Health, Reproductive Health, Preoperative Care, and Seminology.
CODL manages an integrated digital ecosystem, including CODL LMS, BBM LMS, and a Student Information System (SIS)—enabling streamlined virtual learning, registration, course delivery, and student support.
CODL functions through structured divisions—Registration & Examination, Learning & Resources, Training & Development—under the oversight of a Board of Management and academic Board of Study representation. Its mission is to equip Sri Lanka with skilled graduates for the business, public, and private sectors.
