Sri Lanka speaks in three hello’s,“ආයුබෝවන්”, “வணக்கம்”, and “Hello”, and most days you’ll hear all three. We are a small island with big variety: Sinhala, Tamil, Muslim, Burgher, Malay, and more; Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, Christians; city pace and village rhythm. Yet in the everyday, at the kadé over plain tea, inside school assemblies, at office lunch tables, during Avurudu, Vesak, Thai Pongal, Eid, and Christmas, we practice a quiet art of living together. We switch languages mid-sentence, trade short eats, share cricket scores, and light lamps for our neighbours’ festivals. Differences do exist, food rules, dress codes, rituals, greetings, but so do strong similarities: hospitality, respect for elders, pride in education, and a reflex for helping during hard times.
