Sri Dalada Maligawa, also known as the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, is one of the most revered religious and cultural landmarks in Sri Lanka. Located in the historic city of Kandy, this sacred temple houses the left upper canine tooth of Lord Gautama Buddha, a relic that has played a vital role in the political and spiritual history of the country. The temple is part of the royal palace complex of the former Kingdom of Kandy and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988. Built during the reign of King Vimaladharmasuriya I in the late 16th century, the temple has undergone several renovations due to colonial invasions and natural wear over time. Despite this, it has preserved its grandeur and continues to attract pilgrims and tourists from around the world. The architecture of Sri Dalada Maligawa reflects traditional Kandyan style, featuring intricate wooden carvings, golden ceilings, and a peaceful layout surrounded by a moat and beautifully landscaped gardens. The temple is not only a place of worship but also a symbol of sovereignty in Sri Lanka. Historically, possession of the Tooth Relic signified rightful rule of the island, making the temple a political center as much as a religious one. Today, the relic is kept in a golden casket within a chamber and is not displayed to the public. However, its presence is deeply felt during daily rituals and ceremonies conducted by Buddhist monks from the Malwathu and Asgiriya chapters. Rituals are performed three times a day - at dawn, midday, and evening - accompanied by traditional drumming (Hevisi). On Wednesdays, the relic chamber hosts the "Nanumura Mangallaya," a symbolic bathing of the relic with scented water believed to hold healing powers. Visitors are welcome to observe these rituals respectfully. Every year in July or August, the temple becomes the focal point of the famous Esala Perahera, a grand procession featuring dancers, drummers, elephants, and lavishly decorated palanquins carrying a replica of the sacred relic. This ten-day cultural spectacle is one of the oldest and most celebrated festivals in Asia. In addition to the main shrine, the temple complex includes the Pattirippuwa (octagonal pavilion), the Royal Palace Museum, the Audience Hall (Magul Maduwa), and the International Buddhist Museum.
