Founded on 2 August 1800, the Survey Department (headed by the Surveyor General) is Sri Lanka’s oldest government department. It's the national authority for land surveying, mapping, geodetic control, GIS, and remote sensing.

• Cadastral & court‑commission boundary surveys
• Topographic & contour mapping (1:10,000–1:250,000)
• Satellite remote sensing & GIS services
• Hydrographic, building, subdivision, and measured surveys

Operates the Institute of Surveying & Mapping (Diyatalawa) for diplomas, degrees, and training; chairs the Land Survey Council (Survey Act No. 17/2002).
